New research shows more than 12 million pet owners are facing higher energy bills in the UK

Millions of pet owners increase their energy bills by turning up the heating and leaving radios on to keep their animals warm and entertained when they go out, a poll suggests.

More than half the cat and dog owners asked in a survey said they raise the temperature in their homes for their pets, suggesting that as many as 12million people do so in Britain.

Some 64 per cent of men said they turn the heating up for their dogs, compared with 44 per cent of women.

Nearly half of dog owners keep the heating on, compared with nearly four in 10 cat owners.
